Dark Web, Darknet Markets, Tor and VPN. The Dark Web, the part of the World Wide Web (WWW) which exists only in Darknets. A Darknet is a network that can only be accessed with specific software (like Tor, The Onion Router), configurations, or authorization. Tor is free software for enabling anonymous communication. The Dark Web is a very small part of the Deep Web. One way to explain this is, that the Surface Web is anything that a search engine (Google, Bing & Yahoo) can find while the Deep Web is anything that the same search engines can’t find. The Dark Web then is classified as a small portion of the Deep Web that has been intentionally hidden and is inaccessible through standard web browsers. Inaccurate Definitions: The key thing to keep in mind is the Dark Web is a small portion of the Deep Web. Some media is inaccurately defining both and we are trying our best to clear up the confusion.
Deep Web, Dark Web and Darknet
Most people are confused about what exactly the Darknet is. Firstly, the Darknet is sometimes (actually, quite often) being confused with the Deep Web. “Deep Web” refers to all parts of the Internet which cannot be indexed by search engines, and so can’t be found through Google, Bing, Yahoo, and so forth. Experts believe that this Deep Web is hundreds of times larger than the ‘surface Web’ (i.e., the internet you can easily get to from Google). The ‘Dark Web’ or ‘Darknet’ is part of the Deep Web, because its contents are not accessible through search engines. But it’s something more: it is the anonymous Internet. Within the Darknet both Web surfers and website publishers are entirely anonymous. Whilst large government agencies are theoretically able to track some people within this anonymous space, it is very difficult, requires a huge amount of resources and isn’t always successful.
Onion Networks and VPN Anonymity
Darknet anonymity is usually achieved using an ‘onion network’. Normally, when accessing the pedestrian Internet, your computer directly accesses the server hosting the website you are visiting. In an onion network, this direct link is broken, and the data is instead bounced around a number of intermediaries before reaching its destination. The communication registers on the network, but the transport medium is prevented from knowing who is doing the communication. Tor makes a popular onion router that is fairly user-friendly and accessible to most operating systems. Using a VPN for Added Protection: Many Tor users also like to add an extra layer of protection by connecting to Tor using a virtual private network, or VPN. Although nobody can see what you are doing online when you use an onion router, surveillance entities can see that you are using Tor to do something.
Darknet Markets: A darknet market is a website operating in a darknet (e.g., Freenet, I2P, TOR) and in which goods and services (usually drugs) are traded. The legal status of the traded goods depends varies from country to country. According to their major features and design at least a few archetypes of marketplaces can be distinguished:
Forum Markets. These are basicly forums where vendors present their products, customers posting feedback and a community is discussing. These markets neither have an online shopping like interface nor a reputation or esrcow system. Trusted members of the community may act as escrow agents.
Centralized Markets. The original “Silkroad” was the first of this kind. Buyers and vendors have their bitcoins on an online wallet which is controlled by the markets admin and therefore rely totally on the good will of the markets admins. Several big scams happened in the past in which millions of $ were stolen.
Multi-Signature Markets. In this markets funds will be deposited in a multi-signature wallet. At three least three parties (usually: buyer, vendor, market admin) have the control over these wallets. Two of them have to agree to release the funds. The most elaborated marketplace of this kind was “The Marketplace”. Second generation marketplace could not get some serious market share yet.
Information is just provided as an overview about the constantly changing phenomenon of darknet markets. We don’t recommend anyone to visit and buy from any of these markets as they are highly illegal and you may be arrested and jailed by your local authorities. Videos about Dark Net: An eight-part docuseries that explores the dark side of technology. Dark Net is described as an exploration of the netherworld where virtual and physical lives collide, revealing “a more ominous and disturbing perspective of a digitally connected world where our every action is collected and stored”. The series is developed and produced by Vocativ, a technology and media company that applies exclusive proprietary technology to search and monitor the deep web, the 80 percent of the internet that lies beyond the reach of regular search engines. Each half-hour episode will shed light on themes such as bio-hacking, cyber-kidnapping, digital warfare, online cults, pornography addiction, the internet webcam girls and more.
